Details |
Smart Bros. Ltd. began in 1890 when John Smart purchased seven acres on Campbell Street in Collingwood, Ontario, to start a market garden. In 1901, his sons George (W.G.) and Norman joined the business, officially forming Smart Bros. Ltd., which eventually expanded to 500 acres. Cabbage became a major crop, and by the early 1900s, greenhouses were added, covering 10,000 square feet by 1910. Smart Bros. Ltd. later expanded into food processing, canning products like rhubarb, tomatoes, and pumpkin, and became a pioneer in dietetic canned goods with the introduction of the Trimsweet line -the first dietetic of its kind. In 1925, a new factory was built at First and Hurontario Streets to accommodate growing production, which peaked at 325,000 cases annually. By 1948, the company employed nearly 500 people. In 1946, a garage and machine shop were constructed to support its truck fleet. The business was sold to Canada Vinegars Ltd. in 1964, and although plans for expansion were made, the farmland was sold by 1966. Smart Bros. Ltd. officially ceased operations in 1970 with the release of its corporate charter. |
